About
I have faced a number of difficult situations in my life that have ultimately shaped me as a person and as a professional. I have experienced firsthand the pain and challenges associated with losing a parent prematurely; going through a divorce; single-parenting; navigating the family court system; remarriage and the blending of families. I am grateful for all experiences and I do my best to take something meaningful away from each and every event or circumstance, choosing to see it all as growth promoting.
Additionally, I spent 26 years working within the Correctional system in frontline and senior management roles. Having worked within a first-responder environment, I have an understanding of many of the issues that employees face on a daily basis and I am acutely aware of how working in such an environment can impact relationships and influence views of the self and of the world. This part of my career presented its own unique opportunities and frustrations, but it ultimately fostered a deep sense of compassion for people, from all walks of life and it taught me that everyone has a story that is important and unique.
Approach
In my practice I aim to provide an environment that is inclusive, comfortable and safe for you to explore your story with curiosity. Together, we work to find meaning, identify strengths and find ways to navigate different and sometimes challenging life events and conditions.
I have training and experience in a variety of therapeutic approaches and models including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Trauma; Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT); Solution Focused Therapy; Strengths-Based Theory; Attachment-based Therapy; Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Mindfulness etc. I tend to have an eclectic approach when I work with people, drawing from different theories and practices rather than rigidly adhering to one specific modality. I find that this allows me to work alongside clients to identify solutions that work for them.
